THREE people, including a traditional healer, Halid Mjewa, (55), were arraigned before a Dar es Salaam Court, charged with conspiracy and obtaining 260m/- from a businesswoman, pretending to make her rich, get married and bear children.
Before Principal Resident Magistrate
Magreth Bankinka at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court, other
accused persons were Salum Mwawala (34) and Salum Magandi (28). The
three accused persons denied the charges and were ordered to go to
remand after failure to meet the set bail conditions.
The magistrate had ordered each of the
accused persons to secure two reliable sureties. Every surety, according
to the magistrate, was required to sign bond of 130m/-. In addition to
that, each accused person was ordered to deposit in court 43.3m/- cash
or surrender title deed of immovable property, certified at similar
amount.
The case was adjourned to July 4, when
it comes up for preliminary hearing. Investigations into the matter,
according to the prosecution, have been completed.
Prosecuting, Senior State Attorney
Nassoro Katiga, told the court that at unknown time and place, but in
2012 in the city of Dar es Salaam, the accused person conspired to
commit the offence of obtaining money by false pretences.
He alleged that between January and
December in 2012 at Kibamba Kwa Mangi, with intent to defraud, the
accused persons obtained the said 260m/- from the businesswoman, Sophia
Lolila.
According to the prosecution, the
accused persons pretended to be traditional doctors that they would
enable the businesswoman to get married and bear children and cause her
business of selling timber to flourish.
